French Drain Solutions for Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a critical issue with water ingress. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, situated at a higher elevation, began to flow into the yard and infiltrated beneath the foundation of the house. This water intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and created an environment conducive to mould growth within the property, jeopardising recent renovations.

How Can You Identify Signs of Water Intrusion?

The water ingress originated from surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of adjacent properties. Without adequate drainage measures to intercept this incoming water, it was forced to travel beneath the house, leading to significant problems.

Establishing a Dependable Drainage System

CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system aimed at capturing and redirecting water before it could penetrate the home’s foundation.

The project incorporated several key elements:

  • A French drain system specifically engineered to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, channeling it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring precisely drilled holes for efficient water discharge.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller units, connected to new 100mm PVC piping that directs water to the curb.
  • A sturdy retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes excavated to form a solid barrier that prevents water from the adjacent yard.
  • Effective soil removal carried out on-site with a dumper to ensure proper site management.

Which Steps Guarantee Effective Water Management?

The newly installed system now effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. The homeowner has secured a durable, low-maintenance solution that protects their foundation, flooring, and investment in renovations.
